this is the best feature of 6.5 to me. by default vmware workstation will launch a single vm window, which will mimic the windows on your host. however, if you are logged in to multiple users (like me), when you run vmware workstation you will only see the login window. if you are logged in to different users, the windows that those users are running should appear on the host’s desktop. in my case, i have two desktops and multiple windows are appearing on each desktop. the next figure shows the unity mode. the view now looks like i am running 2 vms in a virtual desktop as it should. i have created a virtual desktop as i showed in the previous figure. you can see the gui interface in the top left that looks like this. when you expand the menu you can see the snapshot below with the applications of my two users. you can use the context menu of your desktop and select the icon for create snapshot, which will launch the vm from vmware workstation and create a virtual disk. i have used this all the time for my production snapshots without any issue.

Easily create a network among computers that are in different physical networks (multi-homed) with vMotion using all its available network adapters. By default, vmware vmotion places the guest into a bridged network. In the previous versions, you had to enter both IP addresses of each end in a guest, and also bridge the two addresses by editing /etc/hosts. Using all end devices together with one pair of addresses makes vMotion more efficient and simpler to manage. You can set the number of available network adapters per guest (default is 1) that vmotion will assign to this vm. The guidelines mention that for best performance use at least 5 network devices.
The performance of guest operating systems is negatively affected by their lack of support for certain hardware features. VMware has released a Virtual Hardware Interface (VHPI) for the purpose of interoperability between different hardware vendors. VHPI exposes hardware features and functions on the guest’s behalf to the hypervisor so that the guest can make use of the hardware features without being tied to a specific hardware platform. VHPI has been integrated into VMware vSphere 6.5. As a result, the performance of guest operating systems is improved significantly with a simple recompilation.

Some vendor’s provide hardware based resource reservation. However, this works only on physical servers or environments where hardware resource reservation is supported. VMware vSphere 6.5 provides a software based resource reservation called VM Resource Pools. It allows for efficient resource reservation while providing dynamic adjustment at runtime. Resource Pools allow you to reserve the CPU or Memory resources for a virtual machine. Those resources are available for use by other VMs.
