We’ll then show you some more complex techniques, such as creating layers or overlays, using Paths to create special effects, and working with the image’s layers to create multiple images. Finally, you’ll see how to save an image with different formats, such as JPEG and TIFF. If you haven’t touched Photoshop before, you’ll gain an understanding of how to manipulate your images with this tutorial.

Get the right kind of brush

Brushes are the most popular editing tool in Photoshop. You can use brushes to create new backgrounds, shadows, outlines, and more. Photoshop comes with several built-in brushes, and you can purchase additional ones from the Adobe store.

Brushes can be applied to images that already have other backgrounds and lighting. You can also create a brand-new brush, using a default brush as a starting point. Creating a brand-new brush using the default brush is a simple process.

First, open an image that will be used as the basis for your brush. (In this tutorial, we’ll work with a 16 x 12 image that’s 300 dpi, but the process is the same with any size image.)

Click the Brush tool, and in the Tool Options bar, click “Create new brush” to create a new brush and fill it with the current foreground color.

Let’s get started. I am assuming that you are using Photoshop version 20. You should be able to follow this tutorial even if you use Photoshop CC or any other version.

Open an image and go to Filter→Advanced Filter. A window will appear on your screen. Click OK.

Almost all brushes in Photoshop have both Spacing and Opacity settings. The Spacing setting determines the size of the brush outline.

The Brush Tool
