The unpublished posthumous manuscript of the diary of the Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, written when Kierkegaard was a student at the University of Copenhagen, was edited by his close friend Emil Boesen and published under the title Concluding Unscientific Postscript to Philosophical Fragments.

An existentialist movement developed from the philosophy of Kierkegaard.

Søren Kierkegaard was a Danish philosopher, author, poet, playwright, and divine. He is most noted for his philosophical writings, especially his attack on traditional Christianity, which he claimed are inherently contradictory. His Attack on Christendom (1846) accused Christians of being hypocrites. His poem, Stages on Life’s Way (1846), included a poem for each of the twelve steps in Alcoholics Anonymous.

He lived, studied, wrote, and taught in Copenhagen between 1841 and 1851. During this time he was an experimental writer experimenting with his own literary style. “The most powerful influence on my art,” he wrote in Either/Or, “has been the Danish language…. Danish is the most powerful and richly structured language, not only for the whole sentence, but for every single word. And with its rich structure in the imperative mood it is perhaps the only language that gives us the right to have all freedoms of thought, with the power and right to be free.”

Søren Kierkegaard died on May 16, 1855.

This book is intended to be a major contribution to ecological and sustainable development by exploring the scientific and sociological literature produced during the first half of the twentieth century on the political economy of climate change. It provides an accounting of the social sources of climate change knowledge and of the contributions to the development of carbon equilibrium models. Along the way, the book provides a history of the many different problems of climate change and their resolution. Focusing on the United States, but not ignoring important developments in other countries, it sets these in the global context of the onset of the ecopolitical transformation initiated by the crisis of the 1930s and its possible re-enactment during the era of the Rio Earth Summit in 1992.

Climate policy is changing rapidly, and too often it is a case of too little, too late. In recent years, as so-called geo-engineering has come to the fore, we have been increasingly aware of the possibility of tinkering with our climate in ways that would involve almost unimaginable escalation and reach of human power.
